What is a LoRaWAN Gateway?

Wondered what a LoRaWAN® Gateway is? A LoRaWAN® gateway acts as the "bridge" between your LoRaWAN®-enabled sensors and the internet (the Network Server). It listens for radio messages from sensors, such as temperature, occupancy, or air quality monitors, and forwards that data via an IP connection (Ethernet or 4G) to your management platform.

Available Variants & 4G Backhaul

The UG63 is available in two primary configurations to suit your infrastructure:

• Standard (PoE/Ethernet): Ideal for buildings with existing wired infrastructure.
• 4G Cellular Backhaul: This variant includes a built-in cellular module for independent connectivity.

Why choose a 4G Backhaul Gateway? 4G backhaul is essential for "wire-free" deployments. It allows you to install the gateway in locations where pulling an Ethernet cable is too costly or physically impossible. It also serves as a critical failover backup; if your primary wired internet connection fails, the gateway can automatically switch to 4G, ensuring your data transmission remains uninterrupted.

Exceptional Coverage

Despite its "mini" size, the UG63 delivers professional-grade performance. In urban environments, it provides reliable coverage up to 2 km, penetrating walls and floors in complex indoor settings. In open areas with line-of-sight, it can reach up to 15 km.

For additional functionality, users can expand their coverage through Milesight's Gateway Fleet feature. This allows the UG63 to be used as an "agent" gateway to fill blind spots in a larger network anchored by a controller gateway (such as the UG65 or UG67).
